Traditionally conservative New Hampshire today became the sixth state in the nation to legalize gay marriage, after a bill was enacted by both the state House and Senate and then signed by Governor John Lynch.

“Today, we’re standing up for the liberties of same-sex couples by making clear they will receive the same rights, responsibilities, and respect under New Hampshire law,” Lynch said before signing the bill at about 5:20 p.m.

Lynch said it was a New Hampshire tradition “to come down on the side of individual liberties and protections, and that tradition continues today.”

In early May, Lynch reiterated his position that civil unions were best for the state. But two weeks later, he said his thinking had changed. He said society’s views on civil rights have “constantly evolved and expanded” throughout our history. “That is what I believe we must do today.”

Lynch said at the bill signing ceremony that he hoped that despite passionate debate about the issue, citizens would respect each other as they had after the civil union law was passed.

“It is my hope and my belief that New Hampshire will once again come together to embrace tolerance and respect and to stand against discrimination,” he said.

Gay marriage is now legal in Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Massachusetts — all of the new England states, except for Rhode Island. Gay marriage is also legal in Iowa.

Christopher Rice: Stop Prop Voting

“The California supreme court and the gay and lesbian residents of the state are the victims of a backward proposition system that must be abolished if the state is to be restored to social and financial stability. Proposition 13 had done untold economic damage to California’s infrastructure, and now Proposition 8 has reduced us to a cultural backwater and created a bewildering two-class system of gay and lesbian people that is profoundly un-American by its very nature. Even worse, Proposition 8 exemplifies the degree to which obscenely wealthy interests from outside the state can manipulate the proposition system to enable religious radicals to enforce their social agenda on the majority of America’s West Coast. Let no one for a minute paint this as a war of believers versus nonbelievers. Any Christian with a good conscience knows Jesus weeps for those who willfully restrict the right of others to engage in peaceful, largely interior acts of self-realization that pose no physical threat to other members of their community. The hostility toward gay and lesbian people exhibited by the supporters of Proposition 8 originates from those who feel a sense of powerlessness and frustration over the endemic social problems within their own communities, be they working-class Latinos or Orange County Republicans. Denying gays and lesbians equal protection under the law will never restore the semblance of order to social communities that have been upset by financial inequality or spreading social enlightenment among younger generations. This absence of self-awareness combined with a gross perversion of religious principles deserves to be called by no other name than what it actually is — mental illness.”

Cynthia Nixon Reacts

“Upholding the discriminatory Proposition 8 marks May 26, 2009 as a dark day for the people of California. The idea that gay families like mine should not be included in our country’s promise of equal rights for all citizens is deeply un-American. While California has taken a giant step backwards, states like Maine and Iowa (and soon, I hope, New York) are leading with way towards a fairer and better tomorrow.”

“As the country moves forward on gay and lesbian equality, our supreme court took a giant step backwards. One year ago the California supreme court showed great courage and conviction in recognizing equal protection for all.  Now we must regain marriage equality and immediately go back on the ballot to repeal Proposition 8.”

– Fred Karger of Californians Against Hate, which launched an all-out effort to uncover those behind Proposition 8, especially leaders and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He assured others that the organization will continue to move forward in making the next steps to gain marriage equality in his state.

UCLA’s Brad Sears on Prop. 8

“I think it’s disappointing that the court has decided to uphold Prop. 8. The core of its decision runs counter to its analysis a year ago where it held that the term ‘marriage’ is extremely important and degrading if not applied to same-sex couples. In this decision, they hold the opposite, that as long as you protect the underlying rights and protections of a family relationship, whether or not you call it ‘marriage’ is not so important. And therefore when voters took the name away, there is now no significant fraction on same-sex couples written in the California constitution.”

– Brad Sears of UCLA’s Williams Institute, a research center for LGBT issues

Melissa Etheridge Reacts

“So, will anyone be sleeping better tonight? Those full of hate and fear will surely be disappointed that 18,000 same-sex couples will be living in wedded bliss, kissing their spouses goodnight, checking off those little ‘married’ boxes on all those forms we fill out nowadays. That’s really going to drive them crazy. Then there are those of us like me who still dangle in ‘domestic partnership.’ We can adopt our own children, but we can’t bring our partners who might be citizens from out of the country, here. We can’t file joint tax returns. I could go on. Who will be happy tonight?

“How do I explain this to my children? ‘Well, you know Ellen? She is married, but Mommy and I are not.’ That is liberty and justice for all? I am hopeful as I see more and more states turn to the inevitable future of equality, California will get there. Change takes time.”

– Melissa Etheridge on the California supreme court’s decision to uphold Prop. 8

“The decision the justices made was a weak and safe one as they hold positions that can be recalled.  They also flip-flop around which is dangerous as it’s their job to protect ALL Californians.  Today they did not do that.”

Fresno key for same-sex marriage supporters

By John Ellis / The Fresno Bee

http://www.fresnobee.com/local/story/1388870.html

The next skirmish in the battle over same-sex marriage will be in Fresno, where supporters plan a large rally to kick off a campaign they hope will change minds — and votes. Their goal: to undo Proposition 8.

In choosing Fresno, supporters of same-sex marriage are moving far from the supportive urban environs of San Francisco and West Hollywood, and coming to hostile territory.

Last November, the central San Joaquin Valley overwhelmingly approved Prop. 8, the statewide ballot initiative that eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Supporters of same-sex marriage plan to rally on the Saturday after the state Supreme Court rules on Prop. 8’s legality. The high court has until June 3 to rule.

That ruling is widely expected to affirm the will of the voters. But supporters of same-sex marriage — buoyed by decisions in Iowa, Maine and three other states to allow such marriages — said they plan to put an initiative on the November 2010 ballot to legalize the practice in California.

And if they want to have any chance for a statewide ballot-box victory, supporters say, they must win hearts and minds in Fresno and other parts of inland California that approved Prop. 8 by wide margins.

The rally is being called “Meet In The Middle For Equality.” Actress Charlize Theron is expected to attend, and organizers predict the rally could attract up to 3,000 people from throughout California.

“It has a literal meaning in that Fresno is at California’s midpoint, and it also has a figurative meaning in the sense that if advocates are going to change the way people think about same-sex marriage, we have to go to Fresno,” Rick Jacobs, chairman of the Courage Campaign, a Los Angeles-based advocacy group that supports same-sex marriage, said of the rally’s title.

It’s unknown whether same-sex marriage supporters will run into any opposition here.

The Rev. Jim Franklin, pastor of Cornerstone Church in downtown Fresno and one of the driving forces in the local pro-Prop. 8 effort, said he supports the right of same-sex marriage supporters to hold their event and has no plans to counter the rally.

Still, he doubts its effectiveness locally.

“The greatest results are the last election,” he said. “The numbers are the numbers.”

Last November, more than two-thirds of voters in Fresno, Kings, Madera and Merced counties approved Prop. 8. In Tulare County, more than 75% of voters said yes. Statewide, 52% of voters said yes.

The idea for the rally was conceived by local gay rights activist Robin McGehee. She said Prop. 8 opponents blundered last year by focusing their efforts on the strongly Democratic-leaning Los Angeles and San Francisco urban areas and ignoring places like Fresno.

McGehee, a Fresno resident, said mainstream gay rights organizations “left our families behind enemies’ lines with no resources” last year.

Though the ultimate goal is legalizing same-sex marriage in California, McGehee said the longer-term battle lies in altering attitudes towards gays and lesbians.

McGehee is a Mississippi native who came to Fresno as a college student because she expected to find tolerance in California. What she found, she said, was that Fresno was a lot like her hometown of Jackson.

And like the gap between the end of slavery and true equal rights for blacks, McGehee said, it will take longer to gain acceptance of gay rights than it will for same-sex marriage to be approved.

Rally organizers plan to bus in supporters from throughout the state. A march from Selma to Fresno — a march reminiscent of 1960s civil rights marches — is planned, and then a City Hall rally from 1 to 3 p.m.

After that, McGehee said, two teams will spread out across Fresno and Clovis where they will go door to door in neighborhoods to speak on behalf of same-sex marriage.

Some of those will be veterans of a boot camp known as Camp Courage, which was organized by Jacobs and the Courage Campaign. The camp is modeled after community-organizing boot camps employed during President Barack Obama’s campaign. The camps teach volunteers about such strategies as walking door to door and making phone calls to support a cause.

It was at the second Camp Courage, held in Fresno in early March, that McGehee made what Jacobs called “an impassioned pitch” for his organization to join in organizing the “Meet In The Middle For Equality” rally.

Franklin thinks busing in outsiders could backfire because central San Joaquin Valley residents don’t like getting lectures from San Francisco residents, whom they perceive as too liberal.

He also said it would give a false impression of local support for same-sex marriage.

“You’re not making a statement,” he said of busing people in. “You’re just moving the chess pieces around.”

Also, if you missed it yesterday, Maine became the 4th State to legalize Same Sex Marriage. New Hampshire is next in line, they’re just waiting for the governor to make the final official sign or veto it. If he signs it, then that leaves Rhode Island as the remaining “New England” state to legalize Same Sex Marriage. It’s a mighty movement, and I’ll be happy once it’s everywhere and we can all move on to more important issues that need rallying and advocating, like the Economy and Poverty.

Maine becomes the 4th State in America to legalize Same Sex Marriage today! One by one they all open up. The negative Proposition 8 campaign ended up being a blessing in disguise, as it opened up people’s eyes and making them pay attention to this issue and thus propelling it quicker across the country to recognizing this once and for all,  so we can all put it to rest finally and focus on more important issues like poverty and the economy.

Miss “alleged” California Carrie Prejean, the supposed spokesperson who is anti-same sex marriage and has gone as far as accepting meetings with the National Organization of Marriage behaves in many dirty ways.  She’s a hypocrite just like all those Yes on 8 Supporters.  You pull each and every single Yes on 8 supporter, anti-same sex marriage supporter and you find nothing but filth and skeletons all up and down in their closets.  They are the biggest parasites, the biggest embarrassments to society who use the smallest fraction of their brains when they speak and are responsible for the downfall and creation of the worst cultural human war ever in existence.  Take a good look at your California Spokesperson for anti-gay marriage, Carrie Prejean, posing happily, topless for America:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

“I am a Christian, and I am a model,” Prejean said. “Models pose for pictures including lingerie and swimwear photos. Recently, photos taken of me as a teenager have been released surreptitiously to a tabloid web site that openly mocks me for my Christian faith. I am not perfect, and I will never claim to be.”

Perfect, she’s definitely NOT. She’s a hypocrite. You can’t put nude model and Christian in the same sentence. And those poor saps over at the National Organization for Marriage are so desperate this is the spokesperson they want to push for anti-gay marriage. I know hundreds of homosexual people that live very professional, good human being, non-nude model lives, they blow this bitch out of the water, and that organization right out of the water. But I get it they’re hanging by a thread and on their last rope trying to figure out what else they can do stop gay marriage. And poor Carrie Prejean continues to justify herself for posing nude UNDERAGE no less! Ooo boy, this just gets better and better everyday. Now homosexuals look like saints in comparison to the this kind of double standard presented by this idiot. I am perfect and I don’t pretend not to be, I guess that’s the difference between her and I.

His past association with R.J. Rushdoony’s controversial Christian Reconstructionist movement was an early influence on Ahmanson’s political viewpoint. Ahmanson has stated that his “goal is the total integration of biblical law into our lives.” Referring to his close friend Rashdoony, Ahmanson is reported to have “never supported his mentor’s calls for the death penalty for homosexuals,” rather, as the Orange County Register reported many years later in 2004, “he stops just short of condemning the idea”, saying that he “no longer consider[s] [it] essential” to stone people who are deemed to have committed certain immoral acts. Ahmanson and his wife Roberta completed a four part interview with the Orange County Register in 2004 in an attempt to clarify the rumors that swirled around them. Ahmanson has connections with three other major donors on this list: Roland Hinz, Robert Hurtt and Edward Atsinger III, who have pooled their money to support like-minded candidates and causes through the Capitol Commonwealth Group (CCG) and Allied Business PAC. They spent more than $3,600,000 back in the 1992 election cycle alone. She had a $21,500 contract with the Health and Human Services Department in 2002 to help promote the administration’s $300 million “healthy marriage” initiative, but did not disclose her contract and was using her column to promote the program. Gallagher attempted to withhold this information until she finally admitted the conflict four years later. [2] Due to its sizeable early financial support of ProtectMarriage.com, NOM is chiefly responsible for the qualification of Proposition 8. Their funds made it possible to hire the signature gathering firm of Bader and Associates. Bader then was able to hire hundreds of professional petition circulators to collect the necessary signatures to qualify Proposition 8 for the November ballot. The Protect Marriage Campaign spent $1,227,263 with the Bader organization alone between January and June of 2008. This BLACK African American Bishop said, “They should just suck it up.”, in regards to the defeat of Prop 8.  I have an idea, how about we throw that black Bishop back on the plaintains and I don’t know, eh, just tell him to suck it up.

Gay Marriage and the Democratic Hazard

“Moral hazard” is a phrase more of us know in this era of reckless trading on Wall Street, and now we can apply it to politics. Traders who use other people’s money aren’t exposed to the risk of losing their own money; therefore, they act less responsibly than someone who is fully exposed to the consequences of a risky decision — that’s the moral hazard. In politics, irresponsible behavior happens when there is little or no consequence to be felt, the only difference being that you play with someone else’s life, not merely their money.

The latest example is over gay marriage. The rest of the country is watching to see if a ballot measure in California, Proposition 8, will ban gay marriage in that state. Since June California has legalized same-sex marriage, joining Massachusetts and Connecticut. The court decision that paved the way for this change outraged the usual groups. Social conservatives and various religious groups, including a massive influx of money from the Mormon Church in Utah, are campaigning heavily for Prop 8 to pass. One wonders what business it is of theirs. Marriage has its public side, but given the sharp decline in marriage since the Seventies, what precious institution are they protecting?

If the answer is that a sacrament is at stake, these religious groups have no business interjecting their beliefs into public policy. Various religions traditionally ban the eating of pork, shellfish, and meat on Friday, but we don’t allow those strictures to govern policy. As for the condemnation of homosexuality by scripture, many of those same scriptures advocate polygamy. Trying to condemn homosexuality on religious grounds is a ship that has already sailed in every secular society, and the vast bulk of psychological research has already removed homosexual behavior out of the category of pathology.

What gives the anti-gay marriage forces their influence comes down to moral hazard. If you run no risk sticking your nose into someone else’s bedroom, some people are weak enough to go ahead and do it. What gives them permission is a toxic tradition, deeply imbedded in the right wing, of shameless intrusion. McCarthyism, the right to life movement, school prayer, anti-immigration, and a string of other rabble-rousing campaigns have been based on harming other people without risk to yourself. What makes these movements immoral is that the whole situation is upside down. In finance, you are supposed to take extra care of other people’s money, not less, when you are entrusted with it. In a democracy, majority rule is based on respect for minority rights, the basic idea being that a bond of trust allows minorities to feel safe when they are outnumbered.

Popular democracy sorely tests the bond of trust. Therefore, we have certain bodies, such as courts and the Senate, where the tide of popular sentiment can be checked. In California, the system of ballot initiatives for changing the state constitution is pure democracy at work, without restraint of any kind. If half the citizenry favor a change, their whims override all checks and balances. Prop 8 is the latest in a long line of disturbing, misguided initiatives that amount to a roll of the dice. Will the majority decide to stamp on a newly fledged right of a gay minority?
